Apple set to unveil iPhone 5 on Oct. 4, reports say
Tim Cook is ready for his close up.
For the first time since taking over from departed co-founder Steve Jobs as chief executive at Apple Inc., Mr. Cook will take centre stage at one of the Cupertino, California computer giant’s famous product events next month to unveil the latest edition of the iPhone.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple is set to unveil the iPhone 5 on Oct. 4 in San Francisco, with Mr. Cook taking the stage to make the announcement. According to the report, the iPhone 5 will go on sale within a few weeks of the announcement.
Perhaps more importantly for Apple, the media event will be the first major public appearance for Mr. Cook since assuming the CEO title when Mr. Jobs stepped down on August 24. There is also some speculation that Mr. Jobs will make an appearance at the event, depending on the state of his health.
Apple’s shares hit a new all time high this week on rumours that the company is preparing for its annual pre-holiday product overhaul; each year Apple tends to unveil new iPods, software and other devices at a splashy media event in the autumn.
Apple’s fall event usually heralds the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season in the technology world and is the catalyst for sales in what is annually the company’s strongest financial quarter.
However, this year’s fall event carries additional interest for Apple observers thanks to pent up anticipation for a new iPhone. Over the past several years, Apple has tended to release new versions of the iPhone — including the 3G, 3Gs and iPhone 4 — in the summer.
